What is NaturalizeNY?

NaturalizeNY is a program that offered financial assistance to immigrants who needed help paying the fee for their US Citizenship application. It was a collaboration between the New York State Office for New Americans and non-profits throughout the state. All people registered for NaturalizeNY were provided information about non-profit resources that could assist with citizenship and some registrants were offered financial assistance.

Why am I receiving a survey?

NaturalizeNY is sending surveys to people who registered for the program in 2016, 2017, or 2018. During registration, all registrants were told they may receive follow up surveys in the future. We want to learn whether you have completed the process of becoming a citizen and learn about the experiences of immigrants living in the U.S. By participating in this survey, you can help support the immigrant community and programs like NaturalizeNY.

What benefits will I gain?

You will be contributing to a research study to better understand the lives of immigrants in the United States and what programs can be created to assist them. You will also receive a $25 gift card for completing the survey.

How long is the survey?

The survey should take about ten to fifteen minutes to complete.

Will I be contacted again?

We plan on doing additional follow-up surveys. You may be contacted in the future and asked to take a similar survey.

Are my responses confidential?

Yes, your responses are not shared with anyone outside of the NaturalizeNY team. Any reports or publications created from the survey responses are fully anonymized.

How will my responses be used?

Your responses will be used to inform NaturalizeNY and understand the effectiveness of the program. They will be used to help support the immigrant community and programs like NaturalizeNY.

Will this survey affect whether I am able to become a citizen?

No. This survey will not affect any part of your citizenship process. NaturalizeNY is not affiliated with the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services. Participating in the survey is voluntary and will not affect your citizenship status in anyway.

I have questions about this survey. Who should I contact?

If you have questions about this survey, please email Naturalizeny@stanford.edu or call us at (929) 333-5759.

I have questions related to immigration or becoming a citizen. Who can I contact?

If you have questions related to your immigration status or need assistance with your citizenship application, you should contact the New York Office for New Americans hotline at 1-800-566-7636.

How can I get a gift card?

By completing this survey, you will be able to receive a $25 gift card. You can choose to receive a gift card to Starbucks, Amazon, or Target that will be sent immediately to your email. You may also choose to receive a physical gift card that will be mailed to you.

Can I register for a voucher now?

NaturalizeNY provided vouchers in 2016, 2017, and 2018. There are not currently plans to provide more vouchers in 2019 or 2020.

Who can apply?

Any US green card holder (lawful permanent resident) who is eligible for U.S. Citizenship, is a resident of the State of New York and meets certain income requirements. The program is to help serve New Yorkers who face economic obstacles to becoming naturalized citizens.

Is this really free to me?

Yes, completely free. You do not have to pay any money to register for the lottery, and there will be no costs whether you are selected or not selected. Also, as a New York State resident you are also eligible for free immigration legal services at your nearest New York State Office for New Americans (ONA) Opportunity Center.

What are the conditions?

If you register for the lottery, you will be asked to make yourself available to take a series of short optional surveys about your experiences. Also, if you win the lottery you will only receive your fee voucher if you work with your local ONA Opportunity Center to complete and submit your naturalization application.

Will my personal details be secure?

Yes. Any information that we collect will be stored securely and is confidential.

Can I use the money to cover the cost of other immigration fees or pay the fees of a family member?

No. The money will be allocated exclusively to cover the cost of applying for U.S. citizenship for the people who are eligible and win the lottery. Individuals cannot transfer funds to another family member. However, eligible family members can individually register for the lottery separately.

What happens if I win a voucher?

Winners will be notified by email, text and/or phone if they win a voucher. Each winner will have 30 days to work with their assigned Opportunity Center to schedule an appointment, fill out, prepare, and submit their naturalization application. Please note the Opportunity Center will generally pay the naturalization application fee on behalf of each winner directly to the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services. If a winner fails to claim their voucher, work with their assigned Opportunity Center or submit their application within 30 days she or he may forfeit their voucher.
